James H. Dakin (1806-1852), an architect, was born in Massachusetts, was a student of A. J. Davis, and was a member of the architectural firm Town and Davis. This firm designed the Capitol of North Carolina, New York University, and the Marine Pavilion Hotel at Rockaway, New York. In the 1830s, Dakin moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and worked in partnership with his brother, Charles Bingley Dakin, and the architect James Gallier.
